Don’t Blink, You Might Miss Something

I had wanted to add just one more Vegas post and this week’s iPhone Photo Phun is the perfect opportunity.

I’m both a little proud and ashamed to say that I really didn’t miss my family much while on my girl’s trip. I think Elijah was slightly put out by that and there were times that I wished I had him along for the adventure, but I can honestly say that I never once thought “Gee, I wish the kids were here.”

Not a single time.

In fact, I kept marveling at the fact that I wasn’t homesick for them. I’d call daily and chat for a bit, but other than that, I didn’t think twice about what they were up to. I knew they were safe and probably having more fun with their father than they usually have with me. It never occurred to me to miss them.

Until I got the following photos while waiting to board my plane home…

Y’all, my baby boy learned to ride his bike while I was in VEGAS!! I cannot believe it. I was so proud of him.

And so sorry that I had missed it.

Doh! That would be a big high with a punch in the gut all at the same time.

    Kudos to him!

That's exactly what it was. We'd been working with him on learning to ride for at least two years. He just couldn't “get it.” Then, as I'm sitting in the McCarran airport he decides to jump on and start riding. I was so very proud and so unbelievably heartbroken. So…it was pretty much like every other parenting experience!

they always do the big things when we aren't around… crawling and losing teeth just happened in our house this past weekend – and yes, I was out of town!

Of course you were! That's just not fair.

Thankfully my husband is the photog of the family so even if I miss something in person, he documents it extensively in film.

awww!  I think it's a good sign that you didn't miss them all that much while you were gone.  It means you have an identity outside your kids, and that in the long run makes you a better mommy.  :)

aw. i missed my middle son's first time on a huge roller coaster while I was at BlogHer.  Part of me was bummed I wasn't there to see the pride in his face when he came off of it and part of me was relieved that I didn't have to sit and worry about him while he was on it. But learning how to ride a bike is a bit bigger milestone. But congrats to him for getting it down!!!!! My 7 year old hasn't gotten it yet

I think it also makes a difference if I'm the one leaving. They all went to OK last weekend and I had to stay home to work. I missed them terribly because I was stuck in a big old empty house!

I try to have an identity outside of my children but OMG it's hard!

My son is heading on 8 and it was like he just decided to get on his bike and ride. We just couldn't get him to do it before then, so don't worry about your 7 year old.

I think you're always going to miss something if you take time for yourself. It's nature's way of getting you back for treating yourself!!!

I don't know if it'll help you feel better, but you've been there for lots of firsts and in the future you'll be there for more firsts. I'm a big believer in moms getting some time off and girl weekends for themselves! Where did you stay in Vegas?

We stayed at the Paris Hotel. It was okay but I think next time we'll stay at Bellagio or someplace with more restaurants where we'd like to eat.

It was bittersweet. And the truth is that he probably wouldn't have done it if I'd been home. We have that type of “push each other's buttons” relationship.

Yes, and it was a totally sweet Vegas trip! Plus, I got to see him ride on the same day he learned so that's close enough. It could have happened just as easily while I was at work.

I was at work when Dallas learned how to ride his bike for the first time. He was over at Carina's house and Kyndra taught him how to ride it. Who would have thought of that?! I know it wasn't my first thought. Carina called me at work and said “aside from all of the bad habits my kids teach Dallas, Kyndra just taught him how to ride his bike!” So at least you can say that you were in Vegas instead of at work like I was!
