Moments

We celebrate and memorialize all sorts of occasions: births, deaths, promotions, graduations, weddings. Momentous events, days that serve to remind us of, and keep us moving towards, the “bigger picture.” But what happens to the smaller moments? The kind words, smiles, laughter and interactions with those who touch our lives in little ways. When do we honor those?

Sometimes we acknowledge these sweet moments in kind, by giving back or paying forward what’s been given to us. More often though, they pass by with the giver, anonymous or otherwise, never really aware that a gift has even been given. This oversight is understandable. We can’t go around stopping people to thank them for a smile or kind word, and friends usually will know when they’ve blessed your life.

One of my favorite musicals, Into The Woods has a wonderful song,”Moments in the Woods,” that’s been playing in my head the past few days. While the back story is irrelevant to this piece, the lyrics are fitting.

Let the moment go…
Don’t forget it for a moment, though.
Just remembering you’ve had an and
When you’re back to or
Makes the or mean more
Than it did before.

We all have experienced moments that have altered our lives, made them fuller, or richer. Often, at least with me, these moments are cast aside or forgotten in the chaos of daily living. Wouldn’t life be more bearable if instead we tucked them away for later? Sort of like a special treat for the soul, a boost in times of need.

A reminder that a “big picture” is in fact made of small moments.

    I agree, wholeheartedly.

And I hope someday my blog will be that for me; a series of small moments that – when taken together – add up to a full, rich life.

I look back at each post and remember what made me write it, the new bloggers I met through it, how I felt before/during/after the process.

It’s a celebration. And you have one here all your own.

Once I wrote about wanting to be a reality tv show and this is why. I want to record the little moments that I know I’m forgetting.
